Duvet Glossary - the jargon explained
Siliconised Microfibre: Ultra fine, man-made fibres, usually less than a micron in
diameter. The fibres are soft, light and very smooth to the touch. The siliconisation process
allows the fibres to slide past one another easily, creating a soft texture similar to goose
down. It's also more durable and will keep it's heat retentive qualities for longer.
Cotton Jacquard: A cotton fabric that has a regular pattern woven into the fabric
rather than printed on it. Because it is not a printed pattern, it does not fade with time and use. The name is derived from Joseph Marie Jacquard, who invented a loom
attachment that was capable of weaving patterns into a cotton fabric.
All Seasons duvet: Also known as a four seasons duvet, combination duvet, 3-in-1
duvet or duo duvet. Two duvets of different tog, e.g. 4.5 tog and 9 tog, used
separately or clipped together for a winter combination.
Bound Edge: Superior duvet edge that withstands heavy use and regular washing.
This results in a far tidier edge than found on standard duvets which tend to have
overlocked stitching which is prone to unravelling and may come undone over time.
Double: A duvet size that is suitable for a 4ft 6inch wide bed.
Standard duvet size for this sized bed is 200cm x 200cm.
His and Hers duvet: Also known as a dual tempo duvet, dual tog duvet and split
tog duvet. They have different togs on different sides but are not adjustable.
Kingsize (Queensize in U.S.A.): A duvet size that is suitable for a 5ft wide bed.
Standard duvet size for this sized bed is 225cm x 220cm.
Super Kingsize (Kingsize in U.S.A.): A duvet size suitable for a 6ft wide bed.
Standard duvet size for this sized bed is 260cm x 220cm.
Threadcount: The number of cotton threads per square inch of fabric. A high
thread count indicates a superior quality duvet. Egyptian cotton has a thread
count of 180 or more. CosyCool All Seasons duvets have cotton jacquard
outer covers with a thread count comfortably in excess of 180.
Tog: Thermal resistance of a duvet. The higher the number, the warmer the duvet.
